Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez, in his speech on the 2022 budget, announced that the share of domestic and renewable energy sources in electricity generation has increased significantly.
Fatih Dönmez said that 74.2 percent of the 24,718 MW installed power that has been commissioned since 2017, and almost all of the power plants that have been commissioned in the last two years, are from renewable energy sources. In this way, Dönmez stated that Turkey has risen to 12th place in the world and 5th in Europe in terms of renewable energy-based installed power, and said, “The renewable energy installed power that we commissioned only in 2020 is more than the total renewable energy installed power of 24 European countries. Today, our renewable energy installed power constitutes 53 percent of our total installed power with a value of 52 thousand 930 MW. By the end of this year, we expect our total installed power to exceed the 100,000 MW limit.” said.
Minister Dönmez pointed out that the amount of electricity produced only from renewable energy in 2020 exceeded the total electricity production in 2002 and said:
“In the last 20 years, we have increased the energy we obtain from our own water, wind, sun, geothermal and bio resources approximately 3.7 times. Despite the serious decrease in water revenues this year, approximately 52 percent of the 275.7 billion kWh electricity produced in the first 10 months of 2021 came from domestic and renewable energy sources. Thanks to these significant increases in the share of domestic and renewable energy, both supply security was secured and a positive contribution was made to the current account deficit. Every time we localize the share of 1 percent in energy production, we prevent 250 million dollars of foreign currency from going abroad.
In addition, 8,500 YEKA projects with a total capacity of 4,500 MW, for which competitions are held, and three YEKA projects with a total capacity of 4,500 MW, for which competition announcements are made and applications will be received in the coming period, in order to use renewable energy resources more effectively and efficiently. We will have created a YEKA portfolio of MW.”
