More than half of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development’s (EBRD) investments in Turkey last year consisted of projects supporting green transformation.
Turkey became the country in which the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) invested the most on an annual basis with 1.63 billion euros in 2022.
The EBRD has announced details of its investments in Turkey in 2022. Accordingly, with the bank’s investments in 2022, the total investment in Turkey reached 17 billion Euros, and 85 percent of these investments were made by the private sector.
Turkey, where the bank invested 1.63 billion euros last year, has become the country in which the EBRD has invested the most annually for the third consecutive year among the economies in which it operates. The EBRD’s total investment in the countries in which it operates was over 13 billion euros for the first time in 2022.
More than half of the EBRD’s annual investments in Turkey were financed to support the green transformation and transition to a low-carbon economy.
In this context, 500 million Euros of financing was provided to projects that will increase energy efficiency, renewable energy and grid resilience within the scope of the Green Economy Financing Program (GEFF).
While the Bank allocates 200 million Euros to Ford Otosan to support Turkey’s becoming a production center in Europe for commercial electric vehicle production, wind energy investments and metro line projects that contribute to sustainable transportation solutions were also among the investments last year.
EBRD Turkey Managing Director Arvid Tuerkner, whose views are included in the statement, stated that EBRD financing is an important source that supports the Turkish private sector during the period of volatility in global markets, and said, “We are proud that more than half of the investments we made in Turkey last year were allocated to projects focused on green transformation. This transformation creates more employment and increases the resilience of Turkish companies. Our inclusive and green economy-oriented journey in Turkey will continue.”
900 Million Euro to women Entrepreneurs
Projects promoting gender equality stood out among the EBRD’s focal points last year. In 2022, when the 10th anniversary of the Financing and Consultancy Support for Women’s Businesses program is celebrated, the financing allocated for the program reached 900 million euros.
